Upgrade SCVMM2008R2 with ServicePack 1 step-by-step

This topic provides step-by-step instructions for upgrading to System Center  Virtual Machine Manager (VMM) 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (SP1) from VMM 2008 R2 while retaining your previous VMM data.

First download SCVMM2008R2 ServicePack 1 from the Microsoft site, I downloaded the ServicePack from Microsoft
Technet Subscription (for IT Professionals) :

Start the setup on the existing SCVMM2008R2 server.

Before you begin with the setup, here is some important information to know :

When you don’t upgrade but you install SCVMM2008R2 for the first time, then there is a System Center Virtual Machine Manager configuration analyzer (VMMCA) available :

Starting the setup from here :

Click on accept the agreemment —-> Next

Confirmation check is performed on the existing SCVMM2008R2 Server for ServicePack 1 upgrade.
Click on Upgrade button.

Use here the right user credentials for the SQL database Server of the SCVMM2008R2 Server.
This is important for the installation to access the existing database.

Upgrade is running.

The upgrade to System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008R2 Service Pack 1 is succesfully finished.

When you start after the installation your SCVMM Admin Console you can see the following in the about information :

  1. I just started to update my test-environment with the Server2008R2 Sp1 update, i used the VMM Configuration Analyzer, so the update installation could/would check for any errors or additional add-ons that may occur during the installation.

    its a (quick and) good solution to prepare your update for any errors
