Overview

The Microsoft Virtual Machine Converter (MVMC) Solution Accelerator is a Microsoft-supported, stand-alone solution for the IT pro or solution provider who wants to convert VMware-based virtual machines and disks to Hyper-V®-based virtual machines and disks.
MVMC provides the following features:

• Converts and deploys virtual machines from VMware hosts to Hyper-V hosts including Hyper-V on Windows Server® 2012. As part of the machine conversion MVMC converts the virtual disks attached to the source virtual machine. It also migrates configuration such as memory, virtual processor and so on from the source virtual machine to the converted virtual machine deployed on Hyper-V. It adds virtual network interface cards (NICs) to the converted virtual machine on Hyper-V.
• Converts VMware virtual disks to Hyper-V based virtual hard disks (VHDs).
• Supports conversion of virtual machines from VMware vSphere 4.1 and 5.0 hosts to Hyper-V.
  • Note   MVMC also supports conversion of virtual machines from VMware vSphere 4.0 if the host is managed by vCenter 4.1 or vCenter 5.0. You have to connect to vCenter 4.1 or 5.0 through MVMC to convert virtual machines on vSphere 4.0.
• Offers fully scriptable command-line interfaces for performing virtual machine and disk conversions that integrates well with data center automation workflows and Windows PowerShell scripts.
• Has a wizard-driven GUI, making it simple to perform virtual machine conversion.
• Uninstalls VMware tools prior to conversion to provide a clean way to migrate VMware-based virtual machines to Hyper-V.
• Supports Windows Server guest operating system conversion, including Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2003 SP2.
• Enables conversion of Windows® client versions including Windows 7.
• Installs integration services on the converted virtual machine if the guest operating system is Windows Server 2003 SP2.

System Center Virtual Machine Manager (VMM) 2008 R2 is a server application that you can use to manage virtual machines on a variety of virtualization platforms. As an alternative to using the VMM Administrator Console to administer your Virtual Machine Manager environment, you can use the cmdlets in the Windows PowerShell – Virtual Machine Manager command shell, which is an administrator-focused command-line shell. Integration Pack for System Center Virtual Machine Manager #SCVMM #Automation

 

The Integration Pack for System Center Virtual Machine Manager (VMM) is an add-in for System Center 2012 – Orchestrator that enables you to automate the following activities:

• Manage the self-service virtual machine library
• Create virtual machine resources such as disks, virtual hard disks (VHDs), and network adapters, as needed
• Create virtual machines from templates, VHDs, and from other virtual machines (modifying disk and network resources if needed)
• Modify existing virtual machines
• Turn on and shut down virtual machines in batch mode
• Restart virtual machines
• Move virtual machines to a new host to manage availability and performance
• Create and restore virtual machine checkpoints

System Requirements

The Integration Pack for System Center Virtual Machine Manager requires the following software to be installed and configured before you deploy the integration. For more information abouthow to install and configure the Orchestrator and the System Center Virtual Machine Manager application, see the respective product documentation.

• System Center 2012 – Orchestrator
• System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008 R2
• Windows Management Framework (Windows PowerShell 2.0 and WinRM 2.0)

The activities from the Virtual Machine Manager Integration Pack connect to a Virtual Machine Manager Administration Console which in turn connects to a Virtual Machine Manager server. You can install this console on the Orchestrator runbook server or connect to the Administration console on another computer. If the Orchestrator components and the Virtual Machine Manager Administration Console are installed on the same 64-bit computer, the Virtual Machine Manager server must be in the same domain to be able to connect to it.

System Center Virtual Machine Manager (VMM) 2008 R2 error codes are generated by a state or action, and they display a message that provides information or notifies you of a problem. When appropriate, the error message includes a recommended action.

Some error messages contain placeholder text, such as %ComputerName;. The placeholder text indicates a value that VMM provides in the actual error message.
